Who is Simon?

Simon Schachner is a student, a wage worker, an event organizer, and a community activist. Before starting his campaign he worked as an administrative assistant for TheatreOne. He is a proud resident of Nanaimo's South End and a regular in the downtown community. He is a programmer and active volunteer with Radio Malaspina Society and a founding member of the Popular Participation Movement, a VIU campus club. Simon ran for Mayor in 2005.

Why is Simon running for council?

Simon thinks Nanaimo is a great city to live in, but is troubled by the way in which it is growing. He feels the majority of the population is without representation and that decisions are all too often made in the interest of a relative few. As a city councillor Simon will bring new energy to City Hall; a strong voice for both youth and the South Nanaimo community.

What are Simon's key issues?

City planning: Simon is a strong proponent of thoughtful city planning that puts the interest of the community and the environment first. He also believes that the Official Community Plan must guide the city's growth and be respected and protected when the City considers development proposals.

Civic participation: Simon is committed to increasing civic participation not only in voter turnout but in all aspects of municipal decision making. He believes his uniqueness as a representative combined with his creativity will bring the necessary interest and energy to City Hall to make true democratic development possible.

Public funds for public benefit: Simon believes in responsible spending and usage of public funds. He will advocate for improved accessibility and broader public use of all city-owned facilities including the Port of Nanaimo Centre. Simon will work for more affordable housing, expanded recycling services and facilities, and improved public transit including the return of the downtown bus exchange.
